How to Implement “Do Follow” on Your Blog – Get Your Links Noticed
If you are part of a syndication tribe or if you are just trying to post a link on other blogs in order to help get your own site ranked higher in the search engines, you need to make sure the sites you post on are “Do Follow” sites.
If you are not familiar with “DoFollow” and “NoFollow”, I’ll explain them briefly here. In order to get your website ranked in a search engine, the search engine sends out a spider to crawl your site. When your site is crawled, the spider will crawl all of the links you have posted on your site and use that data to help determine your search engine ranking. The websites for all the links that you have posted on your site also have part of their search engine ranking determined by the fact that their link is on your website.
Some sites, and this includes most blogs, are automatically set up to be “NoFollow”. What this means is that there is code on the website that tells the spiders NOT to crawl the links that are posted there. This means that anyone that posts links on that site will not receive any search engine ranking status from having their link on your site.
So, it is very important that you post your links on sites that are “DoFollow” sites, since the “NoFollow” sites won’t do you a whole lot of good as far as search engine ranking goes. Actually there really isn’t a “DoFollow” set of code for a website. A site is “DoFollow” if it does NOT have the “NoFollow” code on it.
If a website is “NoFollow” – it will have the following code on it:
r e l=”nofollow”
You can look at the source code for a page and do a search for this phrase to determine if it is a “nofollow” site. You can also do a search on any search engine for “Do Follow Blogs” to see a list of blogs that are relevant to your niche.
Most blogs are set up to be “NoFollow” as the default setting. If you are using a WordPress blog – there are plugins available that can remove this code from your blog. One good one is Dofollow . If you are part of a tribe that is doing blog syndication, make sure all of your tribe members have their blogs set to “DoFollow” in order to maximize content exposure for all your members.

Thanks Lori,
I didn’t understand do follow or no follow. Now I understand a bit better. But why do people want a “no follow?
Coach Freddie
.-= Coach Freddie´s last blog ..Bringing Back The American Dream =-.
@Coach Freddie – There are 3 main reasons why someone would use ‘nofollow’
The first is to keep spammer comments from being followed by the Google spider – this usually only applies to sites where comments are not moderated.
Second, to keep paid links, links that are just pure advertisement, from being followed
Third, to keep the spiders from crawling links such as ‘register here’ or ‘sign in’, which have no weight or bearing on a pages actual content for search engine ranking or Page Rank.
Lori,
This is gold that you share here. Thank you. While I have known about this I did not really know how to check sites and I also did not realize that most blogs are set up as “nofollow”. Would you check your own blog in the same way, that is by checking the source code of a post? I wil make sure that I point people in the way of your post right now by sharing this with my followers.
~Marcus
.-= Marcus Baker´s last blog ..Magnetic Sponsoring | MLM Review =-.
Yes, Marcus – most blogs have the nofollow code in the main definition of the theme, which does show up on the page for an individual post. So if you are on the page of a single post, a search for the code will show up there as well.
Hi Lori, this post was quite helpful as this was a topic I had on my to do list to research. I do have a question for you though. Where in my source code do I look? I saw this
is that what I am looking for?
Thanks,
Brenda
.-= Facebooking´s last blog ..F.O.R.M: A Powerful Prospecting Method That Works =-.
@Brenda To find the code on your page:

1. Right click on your page, then select View Page Source.
Alternatively, you can select View from the top Browser window, then select Page Source.
2. Select Edit – Find from the top menu
3. Type the following into the search box:
4. If the code is present you will see it highlighted:
At this point – you can then install the dofollow plugin on your blog.
Hey Lori,
Thanks for explaining this. My blog is now do-follow so so be sure to optimise it do your advantage. I have also added KeywordLuv today as well.

Lori, you are what TSA is all about. Great content that is very needed. Thanks a bunch for bringing this to our attention.
@Nelson – Thanks so much – your comments are deeply appreciated!
Thank you Lori! I have an awesome mentor, Kimberly Castleberry who suggested I get the ‘do follow’ set up right away! I love it when I read confirmation about why I did what I did! And as Kimberly knows (she knows me well) it takes a bunch of repetition before I’m able to tell someone why I did it!

@Linda – Thanks so much Linda! You have a great mentor
I have also noticed that some blogs have a mention of the theme in the footer of the page. Make sure you also remove the nofollow code from your footer as well. You would need to do this manually in your blog admin panel under Appearance, then find the footer.php, do a search for that code, and delete it.
Lori,
Just make sure you make that one DoFollow too!
Good post about the DoFollow plugin. Beth is also correct about the Comment Luv. Another good one is SEO Super Comments which turns every comment into a page that counts witht e search engines.

Hi Lori,
This is an excellent tip. So many people have no idea that their strategy for back-links to their blog is not being executed as they expect when they do not understand the sights that they are posting on.
This is a core blog feature that should be setup for anyone who is active in tribe syndication.
Thanks for sharing with us all.
Make it a great day!

Hi Lori,
Great blog post! I checked and I don’t have that code on my site. When I go to post a new article on my site, I have a box that says “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this post. I have always left that checked; is that why I don’t have the nofollow code?
Also, do I have to manually add myself to the Do Follow directories?
Finally, why do I have to make Super SEO Comments, Do Follow as well? Do I have to manually check each plug-in? I sure hope not!
Thanks for the great information Lisa!
Hi Jacqueline!
So, no you don’t have to check every plugin for the dofollow options .
The trackbacks and pingbacks is a different thing – not related to the nofollow code – but it is a good idea to keep it checked. You can add yourself to the Do Follow directories if you would like.
Super SEO Comments – I haven’t used it – but did some checking in to it yesterday – there are different sections of it that you can set to do follow – If I read it right, each comment gets turned into an individual web page, and a link is created that uses the author’s name as the link to the comment. You have the option to make those author links do follow – so you might as well
Sounds like your site was originally set up without the nofollow code – so that’s a good thing
Thanks so much for your questions – I learned alot by researching the answers
Lori
I am still learning this whole “dofollow” and “nofollow” thing. Thanks for the helpful information!

Hi Lori, I love your posts. I wrote a post about the same topic. You can find it here: http://automarker.net/blog/unlimited-traffic-to-your-website-from-comments/ It also describes a way to check if your link is do-follow or not.
From the comments I received I learned that a lot of the no-follow plugins do not work. Yours definitely works, so great job.

Saw this post talking about dofollow and thought you would like to know about a new site, Wiki Dofollow. It is a community compiled list of high ranking dofollow sites. That way, the list stays current.

If you want, be one of the first to blog about it. I am sure you know how difficult it is getting visitors to a new site. Your help spreading the word would be greatly appreciated!
thanks.
